Bavarian Recipes

Spiced Apple Rings-Apfelkuecherl

There are many tasty Bavarian recipes. A delicious German dessert is Apfelkücherl (apple rings). The apple rings are coated in a batter and deep fried and then coated in cinnamon sugar. These spiced apple rings are delicious served on their own or with vanilla ice cream. I am sure you will enjoy one of my favourite apple dessert recipes.

German Apple Dessert Recipe

Will make about 18

For the batter:

170ml milk
3 dessert spoons butter
salt
100g flour
3 eggs

Additionally:

400ml fat for frying
80g sugar
1/2-1tsp ground cinnamon
3 sour apples such as Boscop or Braeburn

To make the batter, heat 70ml milk, 70ml water, a pinch of salt and the butter in a small pan.

Sift the flour and add to the milk mixture and stir continuously for about 1 minute until the batter starts to come away from the side of the pan. Put the batter into a bowl and add the beaten egg gradually, continually stirring and then add the remaining milk. Beat the mixture to a thick batter.

Heat the fat in a pan or deep fat fryer until the temperature reaches 180 degrees C.

Mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Peel the apples and remove the core carefully so that the apple remains whole. Cut the apples into rings about 1cm thick. Coat the apple rings in the batter and let the excess batter drip off. Fry in the fat for a couple of minutes until golden brown. Remove the apple rings with a slotted spoon and leave to drain briefly on kitchen paper. The dip in the cinnamon sugar.

Serve with vanilla ice cream or on their own.
