German Hackfleischtopf

You will need:

40 g smoked ham
20 g butter
400 g minced beef
2 onions
1 glass red wine
3 dessert spoons tomato puree
salt and pepper
a pinch of ground thyme
300 g sauerkraut
30 g grated cheese
20 g butter

Cut the smoked ham into small cubes. Heat the butter in a frying pan and fry the ham, the finely chopped onion and the ground beef.

Fry for about 10 minutes on a medium heat. Pour in the red wine and stir in the tomato puree. Flavour with salt, pepper and thyme.

Grease an oven proof casserole dish. Pour in half of the ground beef mixture and then evenly distribute the sauerkraut over the top. The pour in the remainder of the meat mixture, sprinkle over grated cheese and flakes of butter.

Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees C for about 45 minutes.
