Known as Ausstecherle in Germany; one of the favourite easy cookie recipes to bake with kids. They will have great fun with cookie cutters and decorating cookies from Germany for Christmas. German Ausstecherle CookiesYou will need: 300g flour, 100g sugar, 2 packets vanilla sugar, 1 packet baking powder, 150 butter, 1 egg.
Decorating CookiesFor decorating cookies you will need icing or powder sugar, food coloring, sugar flowers, chocolate and mixed colored sprinkles, smarties etc. Sift the flour onto a baking board. Add the sugar, vanilla sugar and baking powder. Flake the butter with a knife and add to the flour mix. Make a well in the middle and add the egg. Bring all the ingredients together and knead well to form a soft smooth dough. Place in the fridge for an hour. Roll out the dough and using Christmas cookie cutters such as a Christmas tree, angel, star etc, cut out shapes from the dough. Place the shapes onto a prepared baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10-15 mins at 180 degrees C. Mix some food coloring with the powder sugar and add some water to make a smooth paste. Brush the cold cookies with the paste. The kids can now have fun decorating cookies with smarties, sprinkles or whatever takes their fancy. Depending on the size of the cookie cutters, you will be able to make 80-100 cookies.
